ENGLISH 7 COURSE OUTLINE
PREPAREDNESS
Be prepared to: 1. Challenge yourself 2. Explore new ways of thinking 3. Be respectful of others views and opinions 4. Move around, be comfortable with others 5. Stay focused on tasks at hand 6. Transition quickly and effectively from one task to the another. Also: - Bring a pen, pencil, highlighter, writing journal (I provide) - have a binder to store stuff, - do your homework when assigned, submit on time, GRADING Based on a variety of Rubrics, grading is as follows: A - Mastery of material and skills B Proficiency shown throughout tasks. Very capable. C+ Competency shown in major skills. C Activating learning for growth. Steps towards success made. C- Working on Acquiring the necessary tools for success. Incomplete - More work must be done before a grade can be assigned. Each term you will receive the grade you earned during that term. Your final grade will be based on my assessment of what level you achieved the grade level outcomes at the end of the year. |
BIG IDEAS
1. Reading and sharing literature and other expressive forms can be a great source of creativity and joy. 2. Exploring texts and differing forms of expression enhances meaning and purpose in our lives. 3. Sharing perspectives extends our thinking and empathy for others. 4. Synthesizing meaning from different text forms creates understanding and enhances critical thinking. AREAS AND PROCESS OF STUDY English this year will use a wide variety of literary, media (internet, film, music), and art forms to: 1. Discover meaning through discussion, collaboration and critical thinking. 2. Develop ideas through creative means. 3. Create an understanding of form and process. 4. Better understand the subtleties and layers of language. 5. Build connections between literature, yourself and society. WHAT WE WILL COVER - Paragraph writing (Expository, Descriptive, informative). - Reading strategies and comprehension. - Discussion forums and responses to a variety of texts. - Literature circle novels. - Lots of creative and personal writing opportunities (narrative, poetry, journalling and other genres). - Elements of story and poetry and discovering meaning through questioning, reflection and comparing ideas. - Language skills including connotation, using poetic devices, constructing sentences, proper grammar and editing. - Peer and self assessment activities. - Metacognitive awareness (understanding how you learn, developing values and opinions and create meaning for yourself). LITERATURE CIRCLES
Throughout the year we will explore a variety of novels using different techniques such as individual reading for enjoyment, reading for a purpose, and jigsaw puzzle reading. Please read on a regular basis at least 20 minutes per day. Before bed or to unwind after school are great times to set aside. |
